Emerging economies such as China and India must
take steps to improve the openness and access to their markets, a top State
Department official said Tuesday, both for the success of international trade
talks and the broader effort to rebalance the global economy.
“They’ve been very cautions, and in some cases unwilling, to move to a greater
degree of openness,” Undersecretary of State for Economic Affairs Robert
Hormats said in response to a question about the Doha round of trade
negotiations. The U.S. is willing to negotiate on issues such as agriculture subsidies, he
said, but “what we’re prepared to give in that area depends in part of what we’re
going to get in variety of other areas.” Read more here.
